Statewide Assessment Resource Guide and Toolkit Revised Summer 2014

The Statewide Assessment Resource Guide and Toolkit: Participation Decisions and Use of Accommodations for Students with Disabilities was revised over the summer of 2014. This 37-page document is a valuable resource.

Special Education Resource Guide for the Indiana Academic Standards for English/Language Arts and Mathematics (2014)

These Special Education Teacher Resources have been developed to provide equity and supporting materials to help educators successfully implement the Indiana Academic Standards for English/Language Arts (2014). Use of these resources is encouraged, however teachers and their instructional leader should decide which resources will work best in the school for their unique student populations.

    Chromebooks and Accessibility

FYI: the National Federation for the Blind challenged the use of Chromebooks in NH earlier this year:

"Because use of the Chromebook technology and Google applications would discriminate against blind and print-disabled children by denying them equal access to educational programs, and because public schools must not deny students with disabilities the benefits of their programs and activities, those of your districts that choose to use Chromebooks will be violating federal law, specifically Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Thus, when a school district selects inaccessible technology and a blind student subsequently enrolls, it is too late and the district faces the costly and undesirable imperative of ridding itself of technology it may not use…

…The use of Chromebooks in the classroom will have devastating effects on blind children. First and foremost, blind and deaf-blind students using Chromebooks cannot access any content in Braille through their refreshable Braille displays. Braille readers forced to use text-to-speech do not learn spelling and punctuation and are never truly literate. Moreover, blind students using Chromebooks cannot join their sighted peers in editing text using Google Docs. Blind students using a Chromebook cannot access otherwise accessible non-Google proprietary documents, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files. A blind student cannot use another tablet or laptop in place of the Chromebook because Google’s document repository application, Google Drive, as well as proprietary Google documents, are not accessible to blind students on other tablets or laptops. It can be seen that it is not a solution to buy Chromebooks for the sighted students and buy another tablet for the blind student, because the blind student will not be able to access Google Docs, Sheets, and the like on a PC or iOS tablet. Thus, a school district that buys Chromebooks will unnecessarily foist on blind students an education that is inferior to that which it will afford to sighted students."

    Kindle Books & Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg has just started directly supporting Kindle-Compatible MOBI-format E-Books! (Also EPUB Format) In order to download any of these 29,000 free E-Books directly to your Kindle or other E-Book Reader download our Free

Magic Catalog of Project Gutenberg E-Books

(see Mobipocket for reader software on other platforms including personal computers)

These E-books are file-format conversions of Project Gutenberg E-books to make them more directly usable on Kindle and other E-book Readers. These file-format conversions are either from PG HTML files, EPUB, or via GutenMark, in order to provide a more "book-like" experience on Kindle, including formatting, better punctuation, italics, and illustrations in some cases.

Free Kindle Books offers these E-books (below) under the same identical terms as Project Gutenberg. We consider these to be "the same books" as Project Gutenberg, file-format-converted to run natively on Kindle and other MOBI and PRC compatible E-Book Readers. Please read the terms of use before downloading. Recently Project Gutenberg has started supporting MOBI file format directly on an "experimental" basis, although the existence of these files is not correctly reported if you search on the "PRC" file type. The Project Gutenberg file conversion process to MOBI is different than that used by this website, so sometimes the PG version may be better for your purposes, and sometimes the E-Books on this site. The Project Gutenberg site remains difficult to use directly from Kindle.
